This month our call focused on the internal guardians of the intestinal systems. They’re called probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, and they constitute the body’s first line of defense, as well as support the biological foundations of health. Researchers have reported that healthy probiotic populations are diverse, complex, interrelated, and ever-changing, and are not supportive of harmful bacteria overgrowths.

A robust population of beneficial bacteria is desirable for both pets and competition animals, from birds and reptiles to dogs, cats, horses, livestock, and exotics like elephants. Animals who have health challenges and, on the advice of their veterinarians, have had prescription medicines, de-wormers, excess vaccinations, and flea treatments, could experience a drop in adequate beneficial bacteria. Animals who experience stressful conditions like travel, heat, competition, allergies, and dietary indiscretions are also at risk for less than optimal gut balance. This conference call will address the factors that have a negative impact on the beneficial gut guardians, and how and when to support them.

Carol Bennett and Madalyn Ward, DVM, are leaders in the field of animal health and wellness. As our featured speakers, they offer a wealth of information so we can better care for our animal companions.

Each of the Animal Connection calls is a stand-alone wellness seminar.
